HardieDeck is a 3 piece decking system

HardieDeck Boards

HardieDeck boards are 196mm wide, 3000mm long and 19mm thick. The boards have a groove machined into the long edge for the double winged base jointer.

Double Winged Base Jointer

The double winged base jointer slots into HardieDeck boards on both sides. Then screws are driven through the double winged base jointer into joists to fix the boards in place. The top of the double winged base jointer has teeth to lock in at the snap in top strip.

Snap-in Top Strip

After the boards are fixed in position and stained or painted the top strips are snapped into place to conceal the screws and provide a neat overall finish.

HardieDeck Perimeter Edge Options

For use where HardieDeck edges are not butting up to a wall.

Slimline Edge Cap

Secures the first board with a 30mm overhang and creates a drip edge.

Fascia Edge Cap

Secures the first board with a 30mm overhang and allows for fascia such as HardieDeck boards or cladding to transition neatly into vertical fascia.

HardieDeck Edging Board

Use if you don’t want the black edge cap aesthtic. The Edging board has the base jointer groove machined into only one side. So the exposed side is smooth and gapless. This board needs to be face fixed. And a drip edge supplied by others should be added to the underside of the boards.

HardieDeck™ system provides a highly durable low maintenance deck, with a modern contemporary appearance.

It combines specially machined 19mm thick fibre cement decking boards with a specifically designed aluminium fast track system that provides the concealed fastening mechanism. The jointing system consists of an anodised aluminium base jointer which is screwed to the framing joists, and a powder coated snap in cover which covers the screw heads and provides a continuous contrasting line between the decking boards after the boards have been painted.

This system has three components:

  • HardieDeck™ Boards - fibre cement boards machined for the fixing system
  • Fast-tack fixing system - comprising of a Double Winged Base Jointer and HardieDeck Snap-in Top Strp
  • Coating - HardieDeck can either be coated in a durable paving paint allowing colour choice or in a penetrating clear sealer.

This Installation Guide covers the use of the HardieDeck™ system in a residential deck application. It does not contain all information relevant for constructing a deck.
NOTE: HardieDeck™ system is not intended to be a watertight system. Some moisture will go through the jointers in the form of droplets.

Download the full HardieDeck™ system installation guide here. It covers all the required components, tools and accessories, design guidance, decking layouts, safe working practises, full installation steps, bushfire construction guidelines, care instructions and warranty information.

Care Instructions

To minimise wear and tear, and keep your deck looking good for years to come, follow these recommendations:

Ensure your HardieDeck™ system is coated within 60 days with a full trafficable paint exterior system in accordance with paint manufacturers instructions. In general, best results are achieved with water-based paving paints with optional slip resistance addititives.

Follow the application instructions from the paint or sealer manufacturer’s. You must ensure that that selected coating system is tested, compatible and warranted for use with HardieDeck™. The following coating systems have been tested with HardieDeck™ boards:

  • White Knight Ultra Pave Quick Dry
  • Crommelin DiamondCoat Tintable Sealer
  • Haymes Quickpave Paving Paint

If using alternative brands, contact the manufacturer to ensure that the product is compatible with HardieDeck™ and is suitable for the intended application.
Clear sealing options are also available. Refer to HardieDeck™ system Clear Seal page for more details.

When re-painting the deck:

  • The deck surface must be cleaned with accordance to the paint manufacturer’s specification.
  • Apply masking tape over the snap-in cover strips. As paints may not be compatible with the powder coating on the strips, it is not recommended they be painted over.
  • Alternately, the snap-in cover strips may be removed and replaced with new cover strips after re-painting. The snap-in cover strips may be purchased separately.

Cleaning will maintain the beauty of your HardieDeck™. The deck should be washed with a soft broom and warm soapy water regularly. The frequency of cleaning is dependent on the geographical location and exposure of the building:

  • at least every 6-12 months in rural or normal urban environments;
  • at least every 1-3 months in areas subject to high pollution such as coastal environments and swimming pool surrounds;
  • at least once a month in particularly harsh environments such as beachfronts, severe marine environments or areas of high industrial pollution; or
  • as recommended by the manufacturer of the third party coating system applied, if the recommended frequency is higher than that set out above.

Any damaged HardieDeck system components must be fixed immediately.
NOTE: In particularly dirty environments dry sweep regularly to avoid scratching from dirt and debris.

We recommend protective mats or furniture pads are used to protect against contact from sources such as furniture legs, BBQ’s or planter stands. Minimise dragging furniture & heavy objects along the deck. Consider adding rubber stops to furniture legs, as you would do to reduce the likelihood of scratching a wooden deck.

Some coating systems may require resealing and cleaning procedures ensure to always follow the sealer manufacturer’s recommendations. For information on care for your HardieDeck™ system call 13 83 53 or lodge an online enquiry here.

Can HardieDeck™ be installed low to the ground?

Yes. HardieDeck can be installed close to the ground. The boards won’t cup from moisture like timber boards can. HardieDeck can be installed as low as 50mm off the ground. However, like other building materials it should not be left submerged or sitting in standing water. And ensure that the deck has adequate cross ventilation underneath. So don't box in all sides with fascia boards. For more information download the HardieDeck Installation Guide from the Technical Details page.

Can HardieDeck™ be installed in bushfire prone areas?

Yes. HardieDeck boards are fibre cement which is “deemed non-combustible” under Australia’s National Construction Code and suitable for even the highest bushfire attack levels. The Fast-Track fixing system is made from powder coated aluminium which has been certified for use in bushfire prone areas including BAL-FZ by CSIRO. In certain bushfire attack levels there may be additional requirements for framing and balustrades. For more information please see the HardieDeck Installation Guide on the Technical Details page.

Is HardieDeck™ suitable around pools and in coastal areas?

HardieDeck is ideal for around pools and in coastal areas. All you need to do is upgrade the fastening screws to stainless steel. And you may find the frequency of cleaning needs to be increased to remove the salt from sea spray. For more information see "Care Instructions" towards the bottom of the Technical Details page.

What is HardieDeck™ made of?

HardieDeck™ system provides a highly durable low maintenance deck, with a modern contemporary appearance. It combines specially machined 19mm thick fibre cement decking boards with a specifically designed aluminium Fast-track fixing system that provides the concealed fastening mechanism.

What lengths do HardieDeck™ boards come in?

HardieDeck™ boards and edging board come in 3m lengths and weigh around 19kg per board.

Can I install HardieDeck™ without the Fast-track fixing system?

HardieDeck™ is only warranted if it is installed with the Fast-track fixing system. This fixing system is specifically designed to provide additional strength and durability and cannot be omitted or substituted with any other fixing system.

Will HardieDeck™ expand/contract as it heats/cools?

Similar to most fibre cement products, HardieDeck™ will expand as it heats and contract as it cools; however, the amount of expansion and contraction is minimal compared to other decking materials.

How hot will the surface get?

HardieDeck™ boards will heat up slower than a typical deck, but will retain heat for longer. The paint colour selected will affect the surface temperature of HardieDeck™. Darker paint colours usually absorb more heat than lighter shades or a clear seal option.

Is HardieDeck™ a watertight system? Will water be able to drain?

HardieDeck™ system is not intended to be a watertight system. Some moisture will go through the jointers in the form of droplets. It is best practice that decks have a fall of at least 1 in 100 away from the building to facilitate drainage. Refer to HardieDeck™ system installation guide for further information.

Can I install HardieDeck™ around pools and in coastal areas?

HardieDeck™ can be installed around pools and in coastal areas. However, stainless steel fasteners must be used.  The frequency of cleaning the deck must be increased.

Can I drill holes into the Fast-track fixing system to aid water drainage?

It is not recommended to drill holes into the top strips as this may compromise the system’s integrity as well as the bushfire (BAL) rating of HardieDeck™ system.

What is the slip resistance of HardieDeck™?

The slip resistance rating of HardieDeck™ varies depending on the coating system selected. Ensure paint or sealer selected for HardieDeck™ achieves the slip resistance classification suitable for the application. For decking boards installed in high slip areas e.g. swimming pools, it is recommended to use a paving paint with slip resistance aggregate to achieve minimum rating of P4. James Hardie has tested in accordance with AS 4586 and SA HB 198:2014 - “Guide to the specification and testing of slip resistance of pedestrian surfaces” for selected standard paints and sealers. Refer to the National Code of Construction (NCC) for further details on slip resistance requirements for ramps, landing and stairs.

How should I clean my HardieDeck™?

HardieDeck™ should be washed with a soft bristle broom and warm soapy water regularly. In particularly dirty environments, dry sweep regularly to avoid scratching from dirt and debris.

How easily does the painted surface of HardieDeck™ scratch?

Paving paints are designed to be trafficable and have a higher resistance to wear and tear than architectural paints. However, they are not impervious to scratching and marking. It is recommended to use protective mats, furniture pads or rubber stops on the bottom of the outdoor furniture and minimise dragging of heavy objects such as furniture, barbecques or planter stands.

What type of paint or sealer should I use?

James Hardie recommends a selection of water-based paving paints, tintable sealers and clear sealers for HardieDeck™. The recommended paving paints and sealers have been tested and approved by James Hardie to ensure suitability. Click for an updated list or recommended paints and sealers.

If I choose the clear seal option, do I have to worry about stains?

There are different types and brands of clear sealers available for HardieDeck™. Stain resistance relies heavily on the application you intend for your deck. For example, if you intend to use your deck for entertaining friends and family, there is a risk of food and drink spills, so stain resistance is very important. Leaves, dirt, bird droppings and potted plants may also stain your deck. If a stain occurs, clean it immediately with a solution of hot water and detergent. Refer to HardieDeck™ Clear Seal Instructions for a list of recommended products and general information on clear sealers.

Can I re-seal my HardieDeck™?

Ensure that the surface is thoroughly cleaned and fully dry prior to re-sealing. Stubborn stains may be removed or lightened by spot sanding. The sealer can be applied directly over the top strips. For more information, refer to HardieDeck™ Clear Seal Instructions available here.

Can I paint over the clear seal option?

Clear sealers are designed to repel moisture. Therefore, application of any water-based paving paint over the sealer is unlikely to work well. You will need to carefully sand the surface back to remove the clear seal, or wait until the sealer has worn off before painting.

How often should I re-paint or re-seal my HardieDeck™?

Frequency of re-painting or re-sealing HardieDeck™ depends on several factors - how often it is used, the amount of exposure to elements, mechanical wear and tear, corrosive environments e.g. swimming pool chemicals. Wear and tear on painted surfaces is easily identified and will indicate when the deck needs to be re-painted. Clear sealed decks require re-painting when dark patches form after rainfall or washing down the deck. Refer to coating manufacturers for more information on re-painting frequency.

What should be done when re-painting or re-sealing HardieDeck™?

When re-painting or re-sealing, ensure that the surface is properly cleaned - sweep away all dirt and debris then wash the surface to remove any oil and grease spots. Apply masking tape over the snap-in cover strips prior to painting or remove the snap-in cover strips and replace them with new cover strips after re-painting. Note: The snap-in cover strips may be purchased separately in packs of 5.

What warranty is offered for HardieDeck™ system?

HardieDeck™ system is warranted for a period of 10 years. Please refer to HardieDeck™ system Warranty for full terms and conditions.
