Many Australians dream of owning a home in the country. However, living in the Australian bush comes with its trials and the ever-looming risk of bushfires. Follow the journey of one Australian family who rebuilt their dream home and outdoor area, using durable materials to recreate their home after it was ravaged by bushfires.
Choosing durable materials
“Our project started not as a dream of building a new house, but rather it was to replace our home which was destroyed in the Samson Flat bushfires which ravaged the Adelaide Hills back in 2015,” say the owners of this Forreston home.
After experiencing first-hand, the devastation that bushfires can cause, the family was determined to find durable, fire-resistant materials with which to reconstruct their home.
“We went into the new build with a strong focus on fire-resistant materials. HardieDeck™ was the perfect product in this regard. Throughout the Adelaide Hills you can’t find a more appropriate material to build a deck with, not only for our BAL ratings but also for our climate.”
The owners of this home in Forreston wanted a durable, fire-resistant decking solution after experiencing the destruction caused by the Samson Flat bushfires in 2015.
Made from a fibre cement composite, HardieDeck is a durable decking material that is bush fire approved (BAL-FZ) and deemed non-combustible by the National Construction Code (NCC) of Australia. CSIRO certified it’s a decking solution made for bushfire prone areas and flame zones.

Getting the timber look
The owners wanted a timber look for their decking area, one that echoed the look and feel of their bushland surroundings. They chose a timber stain for their HardieDeck, using two different coloured stains from Intergrain.
“They wanted a darker timber deck to match the Merbau and Redgum timber which features around the house,” says builder Oliver Millot from ODM Building Co. “To achieve this look, we used two coats of Merbau stain then a coat of Redgum stain over the top. When applying the top coat, we brushed it off to get the grain look through the stain. This technique is effective for creating the feel of timber grain.”
HardieDeck can be painted or stained any colour. In this case, the owners chose a timber stain finish to ensure the deck echoed the look and feel of the surrounding bushland environment.
The technique was a win-win for the owners who wanted a timber-look deck minus the constant maintenance. Unlike timber, HardieDeck doesn’t need to be re-stained every 4 to 6 months, which means they have more time to enjoy the deck rather than maintaining it.
“Timber is a beautiful material,” says Oliver, “but the up-keep means that people are often reluctant to build large outdoor entertaining areas with it. Or if they do, it can easily become aged and weathered without the correct care. With HardieDeck you don’t get cupping of the boards, snapped screws, colour fading, or annual maintenance bills for re-oiling.”
“There are also some more subtle financial savings, he continues,” Due to the fact that it is a sealed system with no gaps over 3mm, we were able to change the frame from steel to timber, enclosing the sub-floor to completely seal the floor. This saved the clients thousands of dollars, allowing them to invest in a larger outdoor area. In summary, we have created a fire retardant, stable, attractive and affordable outdoor area which is easy to maintain.”
For the owners of this bushland home, HardieDeck enabled them to create a magnificent outdoor area complete with a pool and a platform for sunbaking, and later a spa bath.
“When you have such stunning views of green rolling hills and valleys like we do, you have to celebrate the outdoors with an expansive outdoor area.”
The owners of this stunning property think it's important to celebrate the outdoors with an expansive outdoor area, and we tend to agree.
Oliver echoes this sentiment: “I can’t stress enough what a game changer HardieDeck is for people who want large beautiful outdoor areas, but don’t want the maintenance,” says Oliver.
“I have a real love of timber, and have never liked other composite materials,” he says, “having used HardieDeck, I have found the perfect balance of the timber look along with durability.”
“It’s hard to not be impressed with the finished product, and that makes our job both easier and more rewarding.”
