When local Curl Curl builder, Greg Leiberman of Freshwater Homes looked for alternative options when replacing his timber pool surround and alfresco deck, he had two primary concerns; What would last under full sun exposure and would not deteriorate under regular salt water contact?
"I had re-coated my timber deck three times within 12 months...I was fed up", Greg told us. "The HardieDeck™ system is resistant to moisture damage and because it is cement based, the sun and salt water won't be an issue".

Part of the appeal with the new decking product was the concealed fixing system, which not only makes the deck look clean and sleek and matches the cladding on the home perfectly, but has the added functional benefit of preventing boards from coming loose over time or popping screws or nails, which have the potential to cause some nasty injuries.
"As a builder, the installation process was also great to me. I wasn't going to get a sore back from pre-drilling and screwing down 2000 plus screws, like I had done with the original timber deck".
Greg ended up using just over 500 screws with the new HardieDeck™ system and it was completely installed and coated in a matter of days. He used a Crommelin clear concrete sealer with a non-slip additive for a raw finished look, which took him just over 3 hours to coat twice.
The decking boards were coated in a clear sealer from Crommelin. Not a screw in sight.
Walking on the deck now, it is hard to imagine the old deck it replaced, and being cement based, it doesn't absorb as much heat, so it's more comfortable to walk on barefoot on a hot day.
Blending in seamlessly with the indoor and outdoor colour palette.
The glass balustrade went back in beautifully and really compliments the rest of the outdoor living area. "I'm really happy with the end result".
