This huge 110 square meter split level deck is made for entertaining and relaxing. On a warm summer day it's bliss. You can have an alfresco lunch followed by a snooze on the outdoor lounge before jumping in the pool to cool down. But life wasn't always so easy.
The old timber deck took an entire weekend to clean and stain. A task which was hard to fit in the home owner's busy family life. As a result the timber deck started to split, warp and pop-up from the deck frame. HardieDeck™ was chosen as an alternative to a timber deck because it won't splinter and it's resistant to damage from moisture, rot and termites.
This deck has to deal with regular saturation around the pool as well as moisture rising out of the earth underneath the deck. The constant soaking and drying cycles which deteriorate timber decks have much less effect on the compressed fibre cement material HardieDeck boards are made from. When using HardieDeck around pools stainless steel screws must be used. Maintenance wise, pool decks should be washed down more frequently. At least 1 - 3 months with a soft broom and a pH-neutral detergent.
Like many contemporary houses this lovely Warrandyte home is painted in whites and cool greys. The deck is a prominent feature that provides warmth to the home's colour palette. The rich colour comes from a combination of Merbau and Red Gum timber stain over the HardieDeck boards.
An unexpected benefit of using the HardieDeck fixing system is that it's much easier to sweep. The fixing system between the boards not only hides the screws, it stops leaves getting caught between the boards.
The range of HardieDeck accessories is helpful too. There's a 296mm wide finishing board which is perfect for stair treads and an aluminium fascia edge cap which neatly allows a HardieDeck board to be used as a stair riser.
The HardieDeck was expertly installed by Decking Out Melbourne, one of Melbourne's premier decking companies. They chose an attractive, geometric square layout. Rather than running the boards continuously and staggering the joints, the 3 meter long boards are lined up and framed by another board running in a perpendicular direction.
In preparation for the Christmas family get together, the stained HardieDeck was easy to clean. A leaf blower gets rid of the leaf litter and then it just needs a light sweep, freeing up time for another snooze on the outdoor lounge.
